Cats do not scratch to annoy you. Scratching is how they stretch their backs, mark territory, and keep their claws healthy. Give them a good place to do it and your sofa gets a break. Here is how we think about choosing one.
Cardboard or sisal?
Corrugated cardboard has a satisfying, shreddable bite most cats love, it is light, and it is easy to recycle when it wears out. Sisal rope lasts longer and suits cats who pull hard. Many homes keep one of each.
Shape follows the cat
Watch where your cat already scratches. If they reach up a wall or sofa arm, they want a tall vertical post. If they drag claws down low, a flat or angled pad fits better. Our pieces are shaped after columns and temples for exactly this reason — they give a cat something to climb, lean on, and claw.
Where to put it
Put the scratcher where the scratching already happens, not hidden in a spare room. Next to the sofa, by a sunny window, or near where your cat sleeps and stretches after a nap. If a piece looks good enough to leave in the room, that is half the battle won.
