You unbox the new piece. You place it, style it, photograph it. Your cat sniffs it once and goes to sleep in the paper bag it came with. Every cat person knows this moment — and it says nothing about the piece, and nothing about your cat.
Cats do not receive gifts; they claim territory. A new object is not furniture to them yet — it is an unverified intruder that smells like a warehouse. Claiming takes a few days, and you can speed it up considerably.
Day 1–2: location is most of the battle
Cats want to be where the household actually lives, and where they can see the room. Put the new piece near a window, next to the sofa, or along the path the family walks every day — not in a spare corner or a hallway. A perfect piece in an unused room will stay unused too.
If your cat already has a favourite napping spot, place the newcomer near it, not instead of it. You are offering an upgrade, not a relocation order.
Day 2–4: make it smell like home
A new object smells wrong — cardboard, tape, distance. Help it smell like family instead:
- Rub a soft cloth gently on your cat’s cheeks, then wipe it on the piece. Cheek scent is how cats label things “mine”.
- Sprinkle a pinch of catnip on the platform or inside the house (if your cat responds to catnip — about a third of cats don’t, and that’s normal).
- Put a worn t-shirt of yours, or your cat’s usual blanket, inside for the first nights.
Day 3–5: good things happen here
Serve treats on the piece. Play with a wand toy around and over it, so a mid- pounce paw lands on it “by accident”. Feed dinner next to it once or twice. The goal is simple association: this object produces snacks and games.
The one rule: never force it
Do not pick your cat up and put them in the house. It feels like a trap, and a cat that has been ambushed once will distrust the object for weeks. Let them discover it; curiosity is on your side.
Day 7: the quiet win
Most cats have made first contact within a week — a nap on the roof counts, a claw across the scratch surface counts. If yours is a slow adopter, keep the piece in place another week or two. Moving it around resets the clock.
One more thing in your favour if the piece is corrugated cardboard, as our whole collection is: it is the same material as the box your cat already chose over the toy that came in it. The scratchy warm surface cats love about boxes is the whole building material here. The odds are good.
