Cats age quietly. There is no grey muzzle to give it away, no slowing on the morning walk. From around seven years old a cat is considered mature, and in radiographic studies more than 90% of cats over twelve show some sign of arthritis. Very few of them limp. They simply stop jumping — and hope you do not notice.

Choose low, not tall

The classic cat tower asks a lot of old joints: a leap up, a harder leap down. For a senior cat, the better gift is the opposite — low pieces they can step into rather than jump onto. A bed at floor level, a perch one easy step up, a den with its doorway near the ground. The goal is a home where nothing your cat loves requires a launch.

Steps, ramps, and the spots they refuse to give up

Some places are non-negotiable — the sofa, the windowsill, your bed. Rather than watching an old cat gather courage for a jump they used to make without thinking, offer a middle step: a stool, a ramp, a sturdy box placed halfway. Cats keep their dignity when the route up is broken into small, sure moves.

Warmth, away from the draft

Older cats seek warmth more than they used to, and stiff joints feel better for it. Move the favourite bed away from doorways, air-conditioner lines, and cold tile, and into a calm corner that holds a little heat. A den with walls — a covered house rather than an open mat — keeps a sleeping cat’s warmth where it belongs.

The litter box, made easy

High-sided litter boxes are a quiet obstacle for arthritic hips. Choose a box with one low entry side, keep it on the floor your cat actually lives on — no stairs between a senior cat and their bathroom — and keep the route to it clear and lit at night.
